This book is a pleasure to read for a variety of reasons, even if you do not care for its eloquence and dry humor. Young tackles a sadly timeless policy question: whether levying taxes on the rich works or not. Spoiler: it does work, case closed. And neither Young nor I say this lightly: the book strikes me as meticulously researched and brimming with facts that policy makers and voters need to consider seriously. The concluding chapters also offer an interesting and thought provoking conclusion about what place means to people and how social scientists should think about people’s attachment to where they live and work. For graduate students, this is a role model for a book that largely draws on quantitive analyses without drowning the reader in a bunch of unintelligible math or jargon. Altogether, rigorous, relevant, and most of all: readable.
A fast and interesting read that brings data to bear on a longstanding political debate: if you tax 'em will they move? Using a welter of data on the super rich, Young carefully and thoroughly chips away at this question, ultimately revealing the myth underlying the political rhetoric. Highly recommended!
Excellent, important study addressed to a general audience.
In clear and compelling language, this book fully debunks a set of pervasive myths about taxation. It's been an absolutely crucial resource for me in thinking about tax reform. If all of our politicians read this, the nation would be better off!
