This book is very lacking. I'm Chinese and my children are biracial; although I'm also an American, my side of the family is the typical immigrant family. I do love dim sum though, and I like the back of the book where it explains the origin of it; but the board book itself is very mediocre. The illustrations are amateurish and the whole thing has super short sentences (see photos for reference) that really doesn't tell you anything about the social dining concept of it. I will be returning this.
As an ABC (American Born Chinese), I like having these kinds of books to continue passing on a bit of our culture with the next generation. I've been eating dim sum all my life and I haven't tried some of the dishes (or knew what they were called!) ever. It's even interesting to the adults reading this! I think our little girl will enjoy knowing about these dishes when we take her out to eat dim sum in the future!
We read 3-5 books to our 28 month old son everynight. To keep from getting bored, I purchase new books every month to reflect the holidays/seasons. Although Chinese New Year is long past, we still read this book every night - along with Red is a Dragon and Round is a Mooncake! The pictures are gorgous; prose is clear yet still vibrant. This author has a real talent for creating age appropropirate material but not "dumbing it down" or being "too cutesy." Really brilliant piece of writing for young children.
I bought this book for my five year old grand daughter and was surprised that I liked it for myself. The dim sum illustrations are realistic enough to be useful for reference to call the dishes by their traditional Chinese names. There's also a nice story about family. I will order another copy for my friend in San Francisco who annually hosts a "staycation" in the City for her grandchildren. One of their destinations is always a Dim Sum restaurant and this will relate nicely with their activities.
After reading this book, our child DEMANDED to go out for dim sum. Great way to excite kids to try new foods!
We enjoyed dim sum for the first time the other day with our kids. I chose this book to acquaint them with the types of food and what they could expect at the restaurant. We had a lovely time.
As a mother to a mixed-race child (1/2 Chinese), I wanted my child to learn and enjoy her cultural traditions - which of course includes eating! This book is filled with all the elements of dim sum and does a great job illustrating the food items, table settings, etc. Would recommend for anyone who loves dim sum!
My daughter checked this book out from the library when she was 3, she loved it so much that we ended up purchasing ti for her as a birthday gift. She is 6 now, and it is still a favorite. This is a very simple book about a family eating at a dim sum restaurant, but the images are lovely. My daughter even likes the illustrations of different dim sum dishes on the inside cover. This is an excellent book.
