I didn't know what to expect from this book. I definitely wasn't expecting to get so engrossed in such a short book.Usually, short books to hold a lot of substance in them. This isn't one of those stories. Even with such a short length, it was a complete story. I would like to see the inbetween with the two couples; how they interact from day to day. However, that isn't what this short is about.The friendship that blossoms between these two unsuspecting characters is genuine and heartwarming. I was almost afraid to get to the end. I wasn't sure how the author was going to pull off a happily ever after considering...If you are unsure about whether or not to spend your money on this short story, please take my advice and do it. I don't think you will be disappointed. I am wondering if this a precursor to the author's next release. Maybe, maybe not. I will find out soon enough.
“It is funny the crazy things our brains make up to save us from the truth.†Told through a series of letters, Carrie and David become friends of sorts because of an affair between their spouses. It’s poignant and beautifully written and well worth the read!
Short and bittersweet: a neglected housewife gets lured into an affair with a narcissist, who would have likely done the same to her in a year or so when the adventure, challenge and limerence wore off. I’m glad David and Janet stayed together—truly he had neglected her and women have needs people! Comparing the way Ken treated her to there way her husband ignored her... voila! Affair! Also glad that Carrie left that horse’s you-know-what Ken. How depressing would it have been had she stayed? Lived a fake life, a doctor’s wife, in Gucci and Prada grasping the arm of a man who’s a serial cheater and a narcissist—all that love-bombing... felt so real. Carrie going on and being a single mother shows bravery. Would have been easier to stay with her husband and in a loveless marriage “for the kid,†which ultimately ruins children. Great ending. Author writes great characters. Sadly, true to life. We see stuff like this all the time.
Usually when cheaters are discovered, there is so much anger and hatred and on occasion physical violence.This was a different take on how the cheated on responded.There was heartbreak and disappointment, but the spouse who were being cheated on took on a relationship themselves to cope with what was happening in their lives, which actually turned into an affair of sorts.The way in which the author presented the story in letter form was unique and eye catching. Reading the letters laid out what was happening in both of the relationships with the cheaters and the non-cheaters.I really enjoyed the book and I loved the way in which it ended!
Carrie and David, two people whose spouses are involved ln an affair, commiserate with one another through a series of letters. This is a short heartbreakingly True to life read. David had stopped paying attention to his wife and she sought excitement in another man’s arms. Ken, Cari‘s husband, showed little to no interest in his wife and made her feel unloved as well as unappreciated. Having lived through this situation the letters which Carrie and David wrote to one another and the copies of the letters the two lovers exchanged brought tears to my eyes and I found myself openly weeping.Reid has a talent for grasping emotions and throwing them out for others to experience.
I love all of Taylor Jenkins Reid's novels because I find that I do not just read them; I experience them. This short story is no different. I found myself feeling the different emotions of each character, and quickly placing myself in their situation and wondering what I would do.
Set in the 1970's, Carrie Allsop discovers her husband is having an affair through his correspondence letters in his briefcase. Feeling devastated, she writes to the husband of his mistress. An unconventional friendship forms as the two bond over their marital misfortunes. Now, as their friendship forms they question when and how this cycle will end.Once again, Taylor Jenkins Reid creates a masterpiece. This short story, written only in correspondence letters, is absolutely brilliant. Jenkins Reid expertly develops her characters creating a feeling of empathy and kinship towards the duo fallen victim to adultery. I found myself hoping they would begin their own love story. It seems like an impossible task to fully develop characters in such a short story, and in letters nonetheless, but Jenkins Reid did so effortlessly. This quick little story is no light and easy read, but full of love, friendship, and betrayal. Oh yeah, and the end- priceless.
I have never been a fan of the epistolary novel -- in fact, I have never been able to finish one. Information is doled out awkwardly and, if the writing is lush and descriptive, the characters seem stilted and phoney. What normal letter-writer writes like that? However, in this case I was able to empathize with the characters with only a mild suspension of disbelief. They felt real -- betrayed and hurting and lonely -- and I hurt along with them. In fact, I thought the basic character of each of the four people was revealed by the end, virtues and vices. And what if the story IS predictable, as so many reviewers are saying? How many possibilities are there, realistically? Both leave their spouses, neither leave their spouse, one does and the other does not. It doesn't matter -- the resolution of the betrayal is not what is important here. It was a quick and engaging read. However, despite the foregoing, I am deducting a star because of something in the ending, which frankly, I did find surprising and disappointing and, to my mind, out of character. Maybe we were a little "played".
