From Booklist
*Starred Review* The words in this small but mighty account verbalize the essence of mental illness, and McLean's graphic illustrations crank up the volume. The Australian's raw candor and stirring clarity in both words and images make this a rare nonfiction gem, with a power that grips the reader as if by the lapels. McLean's first recollections of paranoia come from adolescence, when he heard voices from the other side of the backyard fence. Soon he was picking up "messages" from automobile license plates, radios, and disembodied voices. Not unlike many who suffer from schizophrenia, to escape the torment of a constantly shifting reality, he self--medicated with the usual drugs of youth, alcohol and marijuana. Despite plunging ever deeper into mental illness, he managed to graduate from university, hold a job, and travel throughout Europe, thanks to the emotional support of family and friends, who often excused his bizarre episodes as personality quirks. Frequently at a loss to understand McLean, they nevertheless provided opportunities for him to conduct what he calls reality checks. The happy ending is that professional medical care has brought his illness under control, and he lives on his own. The price he pays is a life that is "less interesting" but offers hope for thousands who either suffer from mental illness or know someone who does. "This is a powerful, quirky and important book. . . . It outstrips anything else I have read about schizophrenia for its insight into the nature of psychotic thinking and behaviour." —Anne Deveson, author, Tell Me I'm Here

“Recovered Not Cured†is an awareness tool that would benefit any person needing to empathize with a loved one battling forms of schizophrenia. Richard McLean says, “Every creative endeavor seems to reveal its naiveté in time. I’m sure I will cringe at this book soon enough.†I hope he doesn’t, because his insights about belief in artificial and actual, and what time supplies in the realization and manifestation of significant symptoms are golden. He has been refined by torment, and has also learned to live with wayward connections. The author’s insights about watching television or listening to the radio are important, in the resultant mental exhaustion and anguish. So too, are a collection of journal entries that bring cognition to normally illusive points within a very abstract struggle. Mr. McLean's art accentuates and gives fascinating visuals. Through it all, and in spite of the oddities, he has one “back of the bus†crew to thank for making it home—where he eventually finds the help he needs to be “Recovered Not Curedâ€.
I got this book for my Mental Health Diagnosis class. It cost lot less on Amazon then anywhere else. Since my university book store did not want to match Amazon price I refuse purchasing from them. The book is great. The first of its kind. Author was able to convey his own struggle with mental health not just through words but his own vivid pictures. He is an artist a writer and an advocate for those less heard voices. Everyone working with mental health clients or supporting family members should read this book. It's an eye opener.
I was deeply moved by the author's candid portrayal of some of the struggles with dealing with the schizophrenia. The honesty about episodes of psychosis, mixed with illustrations as a form of art therapy, are extremely poignant. There is humor and wit and utter frankness. Throughout the book, there are interspersed segments of people who communicate about their personal struggles with mental illness, or the experiences of caring for their loved ones. These excerpts are taken via on-line chat room forums. Overall, it is a story of hope that can give others confidence to be empathetic to mental illness and end stigmatization.
I am a writer and I also have schizophrenia. Richard gives a true and accurate account of psychosis. I really liked how the book was compiled. It included e-mails from other people suffering from schizophrenia, sketches trying to capture psychosis, and Richard's writing about the period in his life when he became ill. If you want to know the symptoms of schizophrenia from someone who lives with the illness, this book is an excellent choice.
This read was very insightful. Some moments had humor for me but overall it gave me slight anxiety reading his gradual descent into mental illness. Definitely a book to pickup if you want to broaden your perspective on schizophrenia.
The book is written brilliantly with letters and drawings to illustrate the complexity, diversity and distress of living with schizophrenia. Completely Altered my perspective of schizophrenia as a mental illness from my education as a psychologist. I am really glad I stumbled upon this book in my search for understanding a loved one with schizophrenia.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The author (trippy Ritchie:) shares his experiences with schizophrenia in a simple and deliberate fashion. The messages he receives from others pertaining to their experiences with the illness and the drawings he includes from earlier in his life give the book a diversity keeping you engaged. His honesty is inspiring. Highly recommend 10/10.
Quirky but very good book on schizophrenia. I learned a lot from this book.
